Bought a used car, private sale. How do I get it home?
I am going to buy a used car from kijjji. Private sale so no temp plates or dealer plates etc.
The law requires seller to remove their plates after sale. The law says using plates not registered to that car is not allowed.
So once I pay the seller and get all the ownership docs etc. How do I get it home?
I will be transferring my current plates on my old car to the new one. Also what to do for insurance?
I called my insurance and it said office is closed. Times are 9-6pm. I called at 1pm. Must be closed for lunch. My old car will be sold to a friend or be scrapped.
I am in Ontario. Can anybody share some experience thanks.

Insure it, register it, get the plates, go to seller's place and install plates, drive it home. C'mon.

Yeah that part I know but private sales are finished outside normal working hours. So you agree to buy the car. So what next, you pay him in full and just leave the car there until all the paperwork is done and then go get it?
Or do you withhold payment until all this is done?

As far as I remember:
1. The seller can drive it to your house, or
2. Call your insurance and insure your car, they'll email you a slip, print it, take it, your old plates, and the ownership transfer to the nearest registry office, register the car, then go put your old plates on the car and drive it away.

Get the seller to meet you at your insurance brokers office and get the car transferred there and insured on the spot. You will receive plates and bam! On the road! At least that is how I did it in B.C.

I am thinking of asking the seller to drive it to my house. However how many are willing to drive it to another city?
I don't mind driving him back if they are okay with it.

There is a specific used vehicle information package for private auto sales in Ontario. The buyers portion should include all of the of the relevant info and the seller MUST supply this package. See here:

Insurers do not give plates in Ontario. Also I will be transferring everything from my old car to this one.
The problem with this deal is it is done after work so most government offices are closed.

Yes, it's alright to leave the car there. I've done it a couple of times.

Yea, if I want to sell my car bad, I would drive it to the buyer's house but ask if he can give me a lift back home.

Ask him to drive it to your home and you drive him back or pay for his cab fare. If he declines, then ask if you can leave it at his house for a couple of days until you get your paperwork ready. These things should be common sense...

Having the seller drop off the vehicle to the buyer just makes life so much easier for everyone involved. That's how I sold my last car.

What kind of insurance closes at 6pm? Most are open 24hrs aren't they? Call and get insurance number and take that to DMV and get a temp plate (around $35) good for 10 days

That's not at all a unreasonable request if you help give him a ride back.
Communicate this with the seller... It'll save you towing fees.

Any reason for seller and you not to meet at MTO office and you the transfer of ownership on the spot and you get the plates.

In Ontario you can legally, temporarily switch your plates and insurance to a car that you have purchased and drive it without going to the ministry or notifying your insurance company for up to two weeks if certain conditions are met....
Basically, you MUST NOT DRIVE your OLD car at all after you make the switch. Then you need your own valid insurance, a valid safety and etest for the vehicle, the registration signed and dated by the former owner. A completed Used Vehicle package and a signed and dated receipt.
Also you WILL most likely get pulled over but don't panic any cop who isn't a headcase or rookie should know about this. Once all your paper work checks out you should be good to go.
If the vehicle you bought isn't safetied or etested you CAN NOT do this. You must go to a MTO outlet and get a temporary sticker to get a saftey and etest.
